Canine Crunchies
“Our vision is for a community where animals are treated with respect and live in harmony and in safe habitats in our world.”
Mount Eliza Primary School, Victoria
In 2008, Mount Eliza Primary School went on an ruMAD? journey across the whole school as part of their inquiry unit. For six weeks every student in the school participated and each Grade focused on different areas of interest.
After discovering their passion for animals, Grade 5S decided to take action on the rights of animals in their community. They spent some time researching the types of abuses that occur at the domestic level and invited guest speakers from the community in to the school as experts on the issue. A speaker from the local RSPCA and a Mornington Peninsula Shire Council Ranger gave of their expertise and divulged some great advice on responsible pet ownership. As a result the class decided to focus a little more on responsible pet ownership and to design a series of posters on the topic that could be displayed around the school and community.
“The children have learnt a lot in the way of research skills and they’ve also learnt a lot in the way of dealing with ICT whilst doing ruMAD?”
Teacher, Mount Eliza Primary School
The class then visited the local RSPCA dog shelter and were moved by the less fortunate canines they found there and wanted to provide some quality nourishment for them and other dogs in the community. After some more research they found a yummy recipe for vegetarian dog biscuits and set about making as many as they could to feed the dogs of their community. When all was said and done close to 1,000 dog biscuits were made and sold to members of our school and community, including the dog shelter. A massive effort! And because all ingredients were donated they cost nothing to make so all money raised ($515.80) was donated to the RSPCA.
“ruMAD? has certainly been a fantastic way of introducing teachers to the inquiry process ad working together as a whole school!” Chris Taylor, MEPS Curriculum Coordinator
